Special guest, Contra Mestre Toca - Has been training and studying Capoeira since 1995 as a dedicated student of Mestre Deraldo in Boston Mass. For CM Toca, Capoeira was love at first sight. CM Toca's 15 years of hard work, loyalty to Mestre Deraldo and Groupo Camara earned him the title of Conta Mestre in 2010. Over the years CM Toca has had the fortunate opportunities to study under many visiting and in-residence Mestres including Joao Pequeno, Lua de Bobo, Angolinha, Roberval and Pe de Chumbo. "All of these mestres have had a large influence on me." The mantra that CM Toca shares with fellow capoeiristas is "train, train, train!"
Saturday nite's film - SLUMS, DRUMS AND CAPOEIRA
The most unique documentary about Capoeira. We follow Tiane, an inhabitant of Rio de Janiero's largest favela, as she tries to establish a capoeira school, and help prevent the children around her becoming embroiled in the drug trafficking for which the favelas are notorious. We also trace the roots and origins of Capoeira, hearing from the oldest masters including, Mestre Curio, Mestre Bola Sete, Mestre Moraes and Mestre Nenel, the son of the founder of Capoeria Regional. Chronicling the history of this ancient art, we explore how capoeira has evolved and exists is modern Brazil.
Cost - entire weekend $40!, or per-day $20, rodas free and open, additional $5 donation suggested for the film which will raise funds for Capoeira outreach programs in Brazil. Classes will be limited to 20 students. Register early!
